This client manages financial records and accounts for financial operations. Payments and financial products also form part of its work. The accounting software brings records and transactions into one system, automates financial calculations, connects external data sources, and returns dashboards and reports for finance staff. It also processes receipts and invoices when document capture is needed.

Summary

Problem

The client manages financial records, accounts, transactions, and reports across connected finance operations.

Solution

The solution became accounting software with secure roles, records, and API imports. It also handles calculations and reports in one system.

Result

The software is made to reduce manual financial work, repeated calculations, and rework in reporting and transaction management.

Client story

The client is a financial services company from Latvia. It manages customer accounts, transactions, payments, and financial products.

Finance staff work with records and reports.

Financial data needs secure access and clear validation. Calculated metrics and reliable reporting are part of the client’s financial operations.

The system also had to manage financial records, connect external financial APIs, and automate calculations.

The solution was shaped as a modular finance system. It brought the dashboard, ledger, and report builder into one product.

Document capture and API imports were included as connected modules.

Exports and audit-related controls were included, with settings and modules that could be extended later.

The client asked for

  1. Securely manage users, staff, agents, administrators, and account roles
  2. Store, search, sync, and manage financial records and transactions
  3. Connect financial APIs with scheduled or automated imports
  4. Automate calculations, reconciliation, budgeting, forecasting, and modelling

Why ready-made software did not fit

Ready-made low-code platforms provide rapid application creation, but their defaults do not define the client’s complete finance workflow. A custom build was selected to combine records, transactions, and APIs in one system. Dashboards, reports, and role-based access remain part of the same workflow, alongside calculations, exports, and audit trails.

Project overview

The solution was designed around secure access for customers, staff, and administrators. Authentication and role-based access keep financial operations separated by responsibility.

To handle the client’s records, a finance module was provided for income, expenses, and accounts. It also manages transactions, documents, and ledger data.

Search, filters, and transaction details support review work. Validation status and source-report values remain visible during checking.

Financial data enters through APIs and scheduled or automated imports. The system synchronizes with accounting, banking, or payment services when the selected solution requires those connections.

Market-data and loan-processing connections are also supported when required.

The dashboard calculates financial metrics and presents income, expenses, and transaction totals as cards and interactive charts. The report builder turns selected records and metrics into tables, charts, PDF files, or CSV exports.

OCR reads scanned receipts and invoices. Extracted fields appear in an editable transaction form, while invoice and report content is available for review.

Technology stack

JavaScript / TypeScript (Node.js)

Application and document output

This language family supports the application interface and PDF or CSV handling.

PHP

Application and PDF output

PHP supports the finance application and document generation.

Python

Data processing and charts

Python supports financial data processing and chart generation.

vue-chartjs

Interactive financial charts

vue-chartjs (a Vue wrapper for Chart.js) displays dashboard and report charts.

jspdf

Create PDF reports

jspdf (a JavaScript library for creating PDF documents) generates report files.

d3-dsv

Read and write CSV

d3-dsv (a library for delimiter-separated files) handles CSV financial data.

maatwebsite/excel

Excel and CSV exchange

maatwebsite/excel (a Laravel package for Excel and CSV files) imports and exports financial data.

django-auditlog

Record audit events

django-auditlog (an audit log module for Django) records relevant changes in the system.

PDF, CSV

Reports and data exchange

PDF carries generated reports, while CSV carries exported financial data.

Integrations

Financial and banking APIs

The system receives financial records, account data, and transactions through API connections.

Accounting APIs

Accounting data enters the system through API imports and synchronization.

Payment APIs

Payment transaction data passes into the transaction and account records.

Loan-processing APIs

Loan application and account data can enter through a connected loan-processing API.

PDF and CSV

The system exchanges generated reports and exported financial data through PDF and CSV files.

The result

See financial activity in one dashboard

The finance dashboard gives the accountant or finance manager a focused view of income, expenses, and transaction totals. Calculated metrics and financial summaries remain available in the same view.

Interactive charts present chart series alongside the finance module’s key figures.

How it works

  1. The system applies date and account filters to financial values and metrics.
  2. The dashboard displays metric cards and financial summaries.
  3. The chart module renders chart series as interactive charts.
  • Review calculated metrics and summaries.
  • Navigate to transactions and reports from the dashboard.

Review and validate records with less manual checking

The transaction and account ledger keeps accounts, payment transactions, and validation results together. Search, account selection, and transaction details give the accountant a clear place to review financial activity.

The system supports adding and editing transactions while keeping validation status visible beside the relevant record.

How it works

  1. The ledger presents account records, transaction dates, amounts, and payment transaction types in a transaction table.
  2. The system compares financial data with source-report values and shows validation results.
  3. The transaction details panel presents the record and its validation status.
  • Search financial records.
  • Review account and payment transaction details.
  • Add or edit transaction data.

Create reports from selected financial data

The custom report builder turns selected records and calculated metrics into a financial report with tables, charts, and summaries. It supports the client’s financial reporting work without separating report preparation from the underlying data.

PDF and CSV export provide formats for sharing reports or moving financial data to another system.

How it works

  1. The report builder combines selected financial records, metrics, dates, summaries, and charts.
  2. The table and chart previews show the report output.
  3. PDF and CSV tools generate the selected export format.
  • Create customized financial reports.
  • Preview tables and charts.
  • Export reports as PDF or CSV.

Turn receipts and invoices into usable records

The document capture view brings scanned receipts and invoices into the finance process. OCR extracts financial fields, then the editable transaction form presents the extracted information for review.

The view also contains invoice details and a generate report action for processed financial documents.

How it works

  1. The system receives scanned receipts and invoices and extracts financial fields with OCR.
  2. The editable transaction form displays the extracted fields with transaction data.
  3. The invoice view presents invoice details and the report action.
  • Process scanned receipts.
  • Process scanned invoices.
  • Generate invoices and reports.
Note: OCR provides extracted fields for review; the transaction form keeps them editable before they become part of the finance records.

What the solution gives

With this solution, the finance team can:

  • Manage accounts, income, expenses, and transactions in one system
  • Control access for customers, staff, and administrators
  • Import financial data through connected APIs and scheduled jobs
  • Validate records against source reports
  • Calculate financial metrics for dashboards and reports
  • Create financial reports and export them as PDF or CSV

Could ready-made systems do the job?

Before the design, the task was compared with ready-made products by their own descriptions.

What the client needs Low-code platforms ServiceNow App Engine, Mendix, Caspio Enterprise app platforms HCL Domino, Oracle Application Express, 1C:Enterprise Custom solution
Secure roles and user access
Manage records and transactions
Connect APIs and imports partly partly
Automate finance calculations partly partly
Fits the client's own rules: stages, roles, reports partly partly
All steps in one place — —
No manual steps between programs partly partly

By the public descriptions of the products and their category.

The main parts of the task exist in low-code and enterprise application platforms, especially custom records, roles, dashboards, and workflows. A ready-made platform is enough when only one part of the finance task is needed.

This client needed its own accounting software because the requirements combine financial records, APIs, calculations, documents, reports, and access rules in one place. The products also leave parts of the process spread across configurations and connected tools rather than providing the complete finance workflow as one tailored system.

In the end

In the end, the result was accounting software made to take manual work out of the path from financial records and transactions to validated reports.
